One summer day, a grasshopper was hopping and singing in the meadow. He was having fun and enjoying the sunshine. He saw an ant working hard, carrying a grain of wheat to its nest. He said, "Hey, Mr. Ant, why are you working so hard? Come and play with me. It's such a beautiful day."
The ant said, "I am storing food for the winter. Winter is coming soon, and there will be no food to eat. You should do the same, Mr. Grasshopper. You should work now and play later."
The grasshopper said, "Winter? That's a long time away. Why worry about the future? There is plenty of food right now. You are wasting your time. Come and have some fun with me. Life is too short to work all the time."
The ant said, "No, thank you, Mr. Grasshopper. I have to finish my work. You are making a big mistake. You will regret it later. Goodbye." He continued his work and ignored the grasshopper.
The grasshopper shrugged and said, "Suit yourself, Mr. Ant. You are missing out on the joys of life. I don't care about the winter. I will worry about it when it comes." He went on hopping and singing, without a care in the world.
The summer passed and the autumn came. The grasshopper still played and sang, while the ant still worked and stored. The grasshopper said, "Look at you, Mr. Ant. You are still working. Don't you ever get tired? Come and join me. It's still warm and sunny. There is still food to eat."
The ant said, "I am almost done with my work, Mr. Grasshopper. I have enough food for the winter. You should do the same, Mr. Grasshopper. You should stop playing and start working. Winter is coming soon, and you will have nothing to eat."
The grasshopper said, "Winter? That's still far away. Why hurry now? There is still food left. You are being too cautious. Come and relax with me. Life is too short to work all the time."
The ant said, "No, thank you, Mr. Grasshopper. I have to finish my work. You are being too careless. You will suffer later. Goodbye." He completed his work and went inside his nest.
The grasshopper laughed and said, "Suit yourself, Mr. Ant. You are missing out on the fun of life. I don't care about the winter. I will deal with it when it comes." He went on playing and singing, without a worry in the world.
The autumn passed and the winter came. The grasshopper felt cold and hungry. He looked for food, but he could not find any. He said, "Oh, no. What have I done? I have wasted my time playing and singing. I have not stored any food for the winter. I am starving. What will I do?"
He remembered the ant and his nest. He said, "Maybe the ant will help me. Maybe he will share some of his food with me. I will go and ask him." He went to the ant's nest and knocked on the door.
The ant opened the door and saw the grasshopper. He said, "Hello, Mr. Grasshopper. What do you want?"
The grasshopper said, "Hello, Mr. Ant. I am sorry to bother you, but I am very cold and hungry. I have no food to eat. I have no place to stay. Can you please help me? Can you please share some of your food with me? Can you please let me stay in your nest?"
The ant said, "I am sorry, Mr. Grasshopper, but I cannot help you. You have made your choice. You have played and sung all summer and autumn, while I have worked and stored. You have not prepared for the winter, while I have. You have not listened to my advice, while I have. You have to face the consequences of your actions. You have to learn from your mistake. Goodbye." He closed the door and left the grasshopper outside.
The grasshopper felt ashamed and miserable. He realized that he had been foolish and lazy. He wished he had worked and stored like the ant. He wished he had listened to the ant's advice. He wished he had not played and sung all the time. He learned his lesson the hard way. He said, "Oh, what a fool I have been. I should have worked now and played later. I should have cared about the future. I should have been more like the ant. But it's too late now. I have nothing to eat. I have nowhere to go. I have no one to help me. I am doomed."
The grasshopper died of cold and hunger. The ant lived happily and
comfortably in his nest.
